MAKEOVER: Gentle Cut and Balayage For The Mature Client

"My client Lisa wanted a dramatic change but was insistent on not cutting her hair short," says Eva Scrivo of the Eva Scrivo Salons, NYC. "She also wanted to maintain her natural gray hair but was open to enhancing it with a tinted balayage." Details for the makeover here.

"My client Lisa wanted a dramatic change but was insistent on not cutting her hair short," says Eva Scrivo of the Eva Scrivo Salons and Eva Scrivo Academy, NYC. "She also wanted to maintain her natural gray hair but was open to enhancing it with a tinted balayage."

Here Scrivo shares the details for the makeover:

Step 1: Hair was cut into a square layered bob with face framing layers and a shorter side swept bang. I decided to cut the hair first so I'm not cutting freshly colored hair off but also to place the lowlights to the shape of the haircut.

Step 2: Using 4N and 20 volume by Goldwell I painted small sections on the bias of the head, which is basically painting the hair in a semi circle so the balayage falls more seamlessly, making sure to leave out certain white or gray pieces around the hairline to act as a highlight.

Step 3: Make sure to saturate each balayage piece effectively with color in order to prevent marbleization. Process for 35 minutes. Towel dry 70%.

Step 4: Glaze with L'Oreal Professionnel Dia Richesse Clear with 9 volume.

Step 5: Style using medium round brush with everything lifted toward the ceiling for maximum height and movement. Additional weight was removed during the dry cutting process.

Step 6: Lastly, I deepened the eye brows using 5A and 20 volume by Goldwell.
