The SalonCentric Education Loft in St. Petersburg, Florida, has become the “go-to” destination for salon pros looking to enhance their skills in color, style and business. MODERN was there recently to attend an advanced balayage workshop.
One of the highlights of the two-day bootcamp was a makeover challenge where the artists were asked to utilize their new skills on live models. The finished models were presented to the group and were then judged by L'Oréal Professionnel Educators Sophia Avera (@ssophiahaicolor) and Tanya Acevedo (@tanyamarie_beautystylist), along MODERN Beauty and Fashion Director Maggie Mulhern (@ModernMaggie1).
Payal Patel (@HairByPayal), of Devine Designs Salon and Spa, Brandon, Florida, was announced as the winner of the challenge, a result of perfect placement and tasteful formulation. “I learned that speed is important,” Patel says. “I realize that if I am able to balayage more efficiently, and paint with intent, I will ultimately be more successful."
Here Patel shares the details for the transformation on her model who had grown-out and faded foil highlights:

STEP 1: Mix Blond Studio Multi-Techniques Powder 1:1/5 ratio with 20 volume developer (Smart Bond added). Beginning at the nape, apply two-point balayage in wide V-shaped diagonal back partings.
STEP 2: Brick lay up the head and toward the front below the parietal ridge, using this two-point application throughout.
STEP 3: Mix a new batch of lightener, but change to 30 volume developer. Keep working from right to left around the head until you reach the natural part.
STEP 4: At the natural parting place two back to back babylights, with two additional babylights directly behind that. Process for 25 minutes with heat. Rinse well, no shampoo.
STEP 5: Apply 6.13 DIA Light 6.13 (semi-perm) blended with 9 volume developer to the roots in vertical sections about 1 inch in the front sections and 2 inches in the back. Process for 15 minutes. Rinse well no shampoo.
STEP 6: To tone, apply 10.23 DIA Light 10.23 with 9 volume all over the hair. Process for seven minutes. Rinse well. Then apply Smart Bond step 2 for 10 minutes. Shampoo, and condition the hair.
