Famed Editorial stylist Orlando Pita (@OrlandoPita) offered a rare and special presentation at the most recent Intercoiffure Atelier, held October 19 and 20 in New York City. Representing Kerastase, Pita presented 2 models on stage sharing his tips for creating the most perfect and clean updo, which begins with a meticulous ponytail. Pita showed how he frequently uses additional hair, forms or a “rat” (he even demonstrated how to use the rat when unraveled). Here are the 8 key TIPS Pita shared on how to create a perfect pony as the base for the perfect upstyle:

  1. Keep several brushes handy. At least one paddle brush (Pita uses a Mason Pearson) and a teasing brush.

  2. Spray the brush, not the hair, with hairspray.

  3. When brushing the surface, do not press with too much tension.

  4. Pay special attention to the little hairs around the hairline. Make sure to spray the hairline to keep them in place.

  5. Once the hair is sprayed, in any area, immediately hit that area with a blowdryer to “set” the spray.

  6. Have extensions in multiple shades available. These are frequently used to add volume or even for something simple like covering the band. Plan to cut away the bonded area or clips, and make sure to bundle for added volume.

  7. Make sure the client does not lean back or forward while you are placing the ponytail. (This will alter the end shape, especially in the nape.)

  8. Ask client if any of the pins are hurting her. (“This can make a big difference in the finish,” says Pita. “If the ponytail is too tight or the pins are sticking into her scalp, she will be uncomfortable and it will show.”)
