When it comes to lash enhancements these days, anything goes. Sandra Sanchez, Glad Lash/GladGirl Northridge Store Manager and professional make-up and lash artist shares her thoughts.

Who says lashes have to be black? Colored lashes offer all kinds of cool effects, like this “Frozen” vibe. Lashes @alittlelashedup, @gladlash

Rainbow lashes. Monochromatic fringes. Color melts. Multi-hued accent lashes. Guy lashes. When it comes to lash enhancements these days, anything goes. And although these new lash looks break the rules, there are still some good guidelines for achieving lash perfection. Sandra Sanchez, Glad Lash/GladGirl Northridge Store Manager and professional make-up and lash artist shares her thoughts.
Q: Are colored lashes a thing?
Sandra: More and more lash technicians are getting requests for colored lashes. Customers see them as a form of self-expression. We’re seeing extravagant makeup creations so why not do the same with lashes?
Q: What are some ways to incorporate colored lashes into lash designs?
Sandra: The possibilities are endless! I like to use the color wheel and use complementary colors for a slight hint of lash color. I like a monochromatic design since it’s very straightforward. You can mix and match colors, again using the color wheel to select shades that will complement the client’s hair, eyes or outfit.
When adding more than one color, I like to stick with all cool or all warm tones and apply the darkest color at the edge and the lightest color in the inside corner. I also try not to overdo it—so I might apply an entire set of regular black lashes, then add 10-15 single colored lashes or 5-10 fans.
Q: Please share some holiday lash ideas.
Sandra: I love Halloween, and I might combine green with purple; brown, orange and yellow; orange, yellow and white, or even some dark purples or orange with hints of glitter lashes at the ends. For Valentine’s Day, hints of red or pink look beautiful. At Christmas, our lash technicians get requests for reds, greens, glitter and lashes with rhinestones—all super creative and festive!
Q: What about makeup with colored lashes?
Sandra: Again, the color wheel is your best friend. Any color works as long as it complements skin tone, eye color and hair color. This is true whether the lashes and makeup are elaborate or very simple.
Q: Guys wearing lashes—discuss!
Sandra: The guy lash trend is very popular in the LGBTQ community. Clients are requesting everything from minimal, all B or C curl lashes, to the most dramatic, long D curls. Glad Lash created GladGuylashes, which are all B curl, .10 7-12mm in a brown tint. They offer a natural look that’s just a bit sultry. Men are also requesting lash lifts and lash tints for darker, more defined lash looks.
Q: Is the lash care learning curve steeper for guys?
Sandra: A little bit, but it’s the same as for women. Shampoo and cleanse lashes daily with a tear-free shampoo. I like GladLash Wash & Wink Eyelash Shampoo + Conditioner. It’s foamy so it doesn’t run and it’s gentle on the eyes. Use a cleansing brush in gentle, circular motions on and around the eyelid/lash line area, making sure each lash strand is covered with the shampoo. Then gently rinse and pat dry. Be careful to not pull on the lashes, especially when they're wet, which is why drying them as soon as they have been cleaned is crucial. We also recommend fans to help speed up the dry time.
