Think of it as balayage's fantastically quirky cousin; Fluid Hair Painting uses a similar painting technique to balayage, but while the client is reclined (like their position at the shampoo bowl) at the edge of a table. MODERN SALON asked the pioneer behind Fluid Hair Painting, KL Christoffsen (@mermicornhair) of Cheeky Strut salon in Grand Rapids, Michigan, all about the technique and why other stylists should try it.

MODERN SALON: What inspired you to try Fluid Hair Painting?

KL CHRISTOFFSEN: I developed – actually, dreamt of using this technique over a year ago. I've always been told I don't do hair like a normal hair stylist. But, I've always been drawn to techniques that are unusual and slight unconventional. If I do have a dream about a technique (which has happened on multiple occasions) – I like to explore the possibilities of using it. And thankfully I have clients that are trusting enough to allow me to try new techniques.

MS: How is the technique done?

KC: Instead of the client sitting up (as in traditional balayage), we have them reclined in a chair with their head resting on the edge of a color table. Because their hair is fanned out, it gives me the ability to thoroughly look over every strand to see how the color melts from top to bottom. Plus, no matter how the client parts their hair you're able to give them a tailored, multidimensional color because you can visually see how everything will collapse together.

MS: What is achieved by fluid hair painting that isn’t by other forms of hair painting like regular balayage?

KC: It's easier to see the color fluidity when you have that elevation. You're able to have more control. It's also an exciting technique to share as the painting process itself is unique – and a great marketing tool! Plus, I take pride in the entire process – from sectioning to painting to the final outcome.

MS: How often do you sell this service?

KC: It really varies depending on the client or on the week. Recently, more clients are asking for it due to its popularity.

MS: How many people at the salon know how to do this?

KC: More than half of our stylists are officially trained in Fluid Hair Painting and will soon be available to travel/teach the technique at other salons! They were taught through one-on-one hands-on training.

MS: Does anywhere else know how to fluid hair paint besides Cheeky Strut?

KC: Not officially, yet. There have been a lot of people out there who have seen it online and are already trying it out on their own. It's been spreading like wildfire! Starting in early 2016 we will be doing a whole tour to certify other salons and stylists in Fluid Hair Painting. If anyone is interested in hosting or participating in a class, they can get in touch with us at mermicorn@cheekystrut.com!
