“See you in September.” If that’s the last thing you said before your client returned from summer vaca with overly lightened, dried or fried highlights, it’s time to put in the fix. “Seen-in- September” highlights are almost always too light and too dry. For those maladies, try these tips from Heidi Afdem, from Peppers in Puyallup, Washington:

Concern #1: During the first post-summer highlight appointment, conduct a thorough consultation and hair analysis. For too-light streaks, suggest a toner or balancing lowlights. Then add a deep conditioner and a trim.

Concern #2. If the hair is starting to look more solid blonde than highlighted, suggest lowlights. To prevent blonde build-up, use a staggering technique and vary the sizes of your subsections. Or, add lowlights every three appointments, or so.

Concern #3. Use staggering to fight breakage, which occurs when lightener is repeatedly pulled through to the ends. When you retouch highlights, pull the lightener through the dark pieces only, and leave the blonde ends out.

If your client has been in chlorine over the summer, suggest a chlorine removal treatment before you begin highlighting.
