As a professional stylist, you may find that many scissors are "one size" fits all fingers. When I met with Ferman, he custom fitted a pair of Shark Fin shears to my fingers, and I felt more in control, and I definitely didn't have to worry about them slipping out of my hand.
With a properly fitted shear, you do not to have to use thumb pressure to cut with the shear. A custom fit allows you to relax your grip and your blades will last longer because they are not being forced together.

According to Ferman, you must check and adjust blade tension daily. It will make sure that your shears are functioning correctly and it will insure you that you are getting the best results.
If tension is too loose…it will allow your shears to fold the hair
If tension is too tight…it will cause the shears to bind
Stylists should also invest in daily cleaning and lubrication of their shear's blades. Use a soft cloth towel saturated with scissor oil and thoroughly wipe the inside of the blades of the shear after every customer. This will extend the life of your blades because you will not have metal on metal friction and it will reduce buildup of chemicals. Don't forget to disinfect too!
Ferman stressed that stylists should only sharpen their shears only when needed, not on a set schedule (and not to sharpen their shears more than they need to). The better you take care of your shears the longer the edges will last between sharpening.

When purchasing a new shear, here's some aspects you should look for:
A full convex edge…for slide cutting
Forged blades, not cast (lower quality shears are usually cast)
A shear custom-fitted to your exact ring finger and thumb diameter

Certified sharpeners in your area to service your shears
Japanese Hitachi Steel (get a 440-A steel or higher – this provides harder steel with longer lasting edges).
