Rodrick Samuels on The Silent Work, Modern Beauty Education and Why Empathy Wins
MODERN SALON sat down with Samuels to discuss the book, beauty education, mentorship and the habits that help beauty professionals thrive.
CosmoProf brands Betty Dain, Cricket, Fromm International and J&D Beauty offer retro packaging for everyday salon needs from spray bottles to bobby pins for the Vintage Vibe, Modern Style promotion.

This article is part of VINTAGE VIBE, MODERN STYLE, a special section MODERN SALON produced as a custom collaboration with CosmoProf. Covering one of the hottest style, design and culture trends of the year, this special section explored trends and presented limited edition products for salons.
Make-up brushes, tweezers, compact mirrors, spray bottles, mixing bowls and brushes, timers, shower caps, hair clips—these salon and at-home beauty essentials have been around all along.
Today they’re eco-friendlier and more ergonomic, and with VINTAGE VIBE, MODERN STYLE these little treasures have their time to shine! Be prepared to hear a client chorus of “How cute is that!”
Retro Colortrak
Vintage styles like the Mad Men floral frocks and the Don Draper hair cut of the early ’60s are easily spotted in today’s trends, according to Gregory Alan, technical director for Betty Dain.
“Taking this inspiration into Colortrak,” he notes, “we’ve designed a Vintage Collection to help salons to deliver that retro feel to their clients while working with our modern tools and accessories to provide a memorable and professional service.”
Styling Must-Haves
The Cricket Vintage Collection includes a little something for everyone! “Bright, cheery colors on everyday styling products create a fun, upbeat look and feel, adding a playful, decorative spin to essential items,” says Cricket Marketing Manager Karen Delzell.
Clean and Tidy
One thing we don’t miss about the “good ol’ days” is the sometimes unsanitary condition of businesses, even salons. “All fields of salon professionals need a sterilizing jar to ensure their tools are clean for each client,” says Liz Hagopian of Fromm International, which adds fun by offering the 33-ounce Diane Vintage Sterilizing Jar showcasing a retro silhouette series of hair styles.
“Simply lift the lid and place your tools inside with your sterilizing liquid,” Hagopian recommends. “After 5-10 minutes you can easily remove your items with the steel lift basket.”
Who Doesn’t Want to be Bobby’s Girl?
"Retro” is redundant when you’re talking about the bobby pin, which continues to be relevant more than a century after its invention without changing a thing. Bobby pins are still used liberally for updos, whether classically tight or a modern messy-bun interpretation.
Cricket’s vintage bobby pins tin holds 150 pins, split evenly into black and brown. “These little beauties are all about securing style, adding lift or creating that perfect updo,” says Karen Delzell, Cricket’s marketing manager. “You can’t create a retro-inspired look without a few bobby pins to keep that hair in place.”
Flips for Clips!
Hair clips are also timelessly useful to both stylists and clients. J & D Beauty and Betty Dain bring out the retro green and pink for your vintage promotion! The Diane Vintage Bobby Pin Display from Fromm International, featuring a Marlo Thomas/“That Girl” silhouette, includes 12 brown match cards and 24 black match cards with each card holding 24 bobby pins crimped on one side to grip hair in place while the flat side prevents slipping.
“These one-sided ridged hair heroes fasten hair in gravity-defying updos without any harsh sprays or heat-infrared technology,” notes Liz Hagopian of Fromm. “They also come in handy if clients want to keep flirty bangs out of their face during work hours. And never lose a bobby pin again! The match card is perfectly compact for a pocket or a purse and keeps pins organized.”
