Round
Ginnifer Goodwin
Longer layers that fall just below
the chin really help to slim and
soften a round face. Bangs can
work too, but they need to be
more of a side sweep.
Avoid: Extremes! Like too short,
too spiky or too much volume–
with this shape. They tend to overemphasize
the roundness.
Square
Angelina Jolie
For a square face, long, soft layers
with a long side sweep work best
to soften the angles and give that illusion
of an oval face. Women with
a square face can go short too;
the key is keeping the cut longer
through the top.
Avoid: Although we're seeing it everywhere
these days, women with
square faces should steer clear of a
one-length, below the chin blunt cut.
Strong bangs and a center part can
also be problematic because they
only highlight the face's squareness.
Long/Oval
Sarah Jessica Parker
Oval is considered to be the perfect
face shape, so just about anything
goes with it-long, short,
straight or wavy. In fact, when we
teach our stylists cutting techniques,
we teach them how to
create the illusion of an oval no
matter the guest's face shape.
Avoid: Cutting the hair too short.
This can make the face look longer.
Heart
Reese Witherspoon
Women with heart-shaped faces
look fantastic in styles that feature
a longer fringe and a sidesweep
at the cheekbone. Both
techniques slim the face at its
widest point and emphasize the
jaw line.
Avoid: One-length styles with a
center part stress the width of
the face.
