Rodrick Samuels on The Silent Work, Modern Beauty Education and Why Empathy Wins
MODERN SALON sat down with Samuels to discuss the book, beauty education, mentorship and the habits that help beauty professionals thrive.
A hairdresser asks other salon professionals to contribute funny or inspiring stories to help raise money for cancer research.

Jackie Yates
After surviving thyroid cancer and supporting his wife through a breast cancer battle, Atlanta salon professional Jackie Yates became determined to raise money for cancer research. Owner of the Jackie Yates Salon for 34 years before recently selling his business, Yates also knew that the salon industry had lots of great stories to share. From laughter to tears to motivation and inspiration, these stories could bring so much to so many if they had the proper vehicle, he felt.
Yates wanted to combine his fundraising goal with his idea for sharing salon stories with readers everywhere. He is now putting together his first book in a projected three-book series and soliciting your stories for this book, Shampoo You: A Book of Legendary Stories that are Curing Cancer. Proceeds from book sales will benefit the American Cancer Gene Therapy (ACGT).
“Shampoo You is a compilation of stories from the beauty industry and we need you,” Yates writes in an open letter to the industry. “We have all been touched by cancer—losing family, friends and colleagues.” Yates asks for “funny stories that can happen only in the salon, on the road or on stage, or heartfelt stories telling how lives have been changed by what we do every day.”
There are three ways to contribute your story to this project:
