Susie Dean (@susie1118) of Twisted Scissor Salon, Hartselle, Alabama, tagged MODERN with this amazing transformation and we just had to know more.

"Cathy came in looking for some 'help'," says Dean. "Using two different shades in a balayage technique would offer beautiful dimension." To get rid of the gold, Dean adds "1/3 of the formula (8N) removed any gold. We were going for a strawberry blonde, so the N  neutralized any gold tones and gave her the beautiful strawberry blonde she was looking for."

Dean picked up her color and got busy. Here she shares the HOW TO:

Step 1: Blend two shades: Joico Vero K-PAK Permanent Crème Color 1/3 each of 8N-9G-9RG with 20 volume and Sunlights blended with 10 volume developer.

Step 2: Alternate the two shades in a balayage/hair painting technique, applying in a V shape pattern.

Step 3: Process for 30 and then shampoo and condition. The formula in step 1 serves as a toner to remove unwanted gold. Finish with Moroccanoil.

When posted on Facebook, many fellow colorists questioned the formula. MODERN checked in with Dean: "The formula is the formula I used. She is a natural level 7-8, so she lifted very light. In the pics her natural level looked way darker."
