Long, flowing locks have been the trend for quite some time now, but 2009 will see a change in this fad. Although some clients may still crave length, it's time for a change. To get your clients on board with a new style for the new year, try one of these consultation tactics.
1. Big Change: If your client is going through a hard time and needs a pick-me-up, now might be the right time to suggest a dramatic change. Whether it's a major color change or a big hair cut, you can change her outlook on life with the right makeover. But before you go for it, make sure she is really ready for something different. Ask lots of questions and look through photos to ensure the best outcome. And don't forget: A big makeover isn't right for all of your clients. Figure out which clients fit the bill and target them.
2. Easing Her Into It: Letting go of long hair isn't easy. Does your client have a specific style she'd like to try? Maybe a bob or pixie cut? Get her there slowly with several in-between length cuts before you go for the final result. Most clients need to be eased into a shorter length. Remember to suggest the right products and accessories for her new 'do.
3. Keeping the Length: Some clients are simply not going to be willing to cut their length. Reshape what they have to give them an updated look. For example, if your client has been wearing long, loose curls, try giving her bangs and a subtle angle-slightly longer in front-without losing length. She'll be on trend and need a new flatiron!
