If you're considering booth rental as your career path, an industry educational firm has some advice for you.
The grass may seem greener for booth renters, but there are things to ponder when considering booth renting as the best option.
Most people envision the freedom and flexibility of booth renting while forgetting the responsibilities of being a business owner. They picture life as a booth renter in terms of enjoying the freedom to plan your day and your future while accessing unlimited income potential. But remember this: booth renters are business owners. Many are unprofitable due to lack of business knowledge and management systems. All is not lost; there are many positive aspects of booth renting, and success as a booth-renter is highly possible when you are business savvy enough to know where to find support when needed.
your own turf
Similar to renting an apartment, when you rent a booth building owners are responsible only for making certain that the environment is in working order in accordance with state law. Conversely, business owners are not responsible for building renters’ clientele. Booth renters are business owners who have much responsibility. They must acquire and renew business licenses; operate under sufficient liability insurance; obtain a legal written rental agreement from the landlord; market for long-term success; continue their training; order and maintain their own inventory; and perform other functions critical to business success.
Booth renting works for those who can handle the responsibilities and day-to-day operations of being self-employed. As a booth renter, it is important to remember that your chair is your business, and the owner of the salon where you work is responsible only for keeping the environment in proper working order. You are solely responsible for your success. If managing expenses, keeping track of taxes and securing insurances are not strengths for you, consider that outright employment might better suit your needs.
acquire the skills
The fact of the matter is that booth renters have unique needs. Salon Training International recognizes this and has designed the Booth Renter’s Management System to meet particular business needs of booth renters in salons and spas. Inclusive of more than 130 business systems, documents, and templates for booth-renters, this manual can be implemented immediately to manage and grow booth renter business, while saving time, money and headaches.
Successful booth renting occurs for those who are business-savvy or willing to learn, and it works for those who are committed to professionalism while being intelligent about finances. Passion for the beauty industry will fund powerful futures and a rewarding life when working smart.
Combining the keen mentalities of a business owner and a technician is tricky and requires balance. Thinking like a technician requires focus only on the task at hand, while a business owner serves clients, builds a financially sound business and effectively manages legalities.
