Why I Could Never Save Money

Salon work is emotional- full of highs and lows all day long. We give a lot, and sometimes we want something in return: comfort, a treat, a little reward.

I was busy. Really busy.
Clients were coming back. Tips were good.
I never hit the ATM.

My apartment was modest.
My car was eight years old and paid off.
I had a budget. On paper.
Still, the end of the month was always tight, no matter how well I did.

Why?

Salon work is emotional- full of highs and lows all day long.
We give a lot, and sometimes we want something in return: comfort, a treat, a little reward.

On my way home, I’d stop at a convenience store “for a soda” but came out loaded with treats.
I did this so automatically. Like in a trance.

Individually, the actions below aren’t dangerous, but stack a few together, and they can drain your wallet.

Ask yourself how many apply:

·       Showing up only if you have an appointment

·       Never sticking around for walk-ins

·       Never networking and passing out your card (still works)

·       Credit card spending is easy. Only charge what you can pay off. Interest is a killer.

·       Morning coffee runs from $4 to 7 dollars a cup. (and a month’s worth?)

·       Food delivery: pack last night’s leftovers. No one needs a heavy lunch between clients.

·       Brand name clothes: You don’t need labels to be a winner. Black looks great on everyone.

·       Happy hour sets you back a tank of gas.

Bottom line?

Be humble.
Live below your means.
You don’t have to suffer. Just stay smart.
You work hard for your money
