Rodrick Samuels on The Silent Work, Modern Beauty Education and Why Empathy Wins
MODERN SALON sat down with Samuels to discuss the book, beauty education, mentorship and the habits that help beauty professionals thrive.
By removing gendered language and pricing based on length, texture, and time, salons can create systems that reflect people as they are, not as society has told them to be.

Hair Has No Gender was founded by Chicago stylist and salon owner Jamie DiGrazia.
In today’s beauty landscape, technical skill alone isn’t enough. Education must also expand to include awareness, empathy, respect and inclusivity. Stylists who want to stay relevant in the next era of beauty must understand that inclusion isn’t a passing trend. It’s the future of professionalism.
That’s the mission behind Hair Has No Gender, the nonprofit founded by Chicago stylist and salon owner Jamie DiGrazia. The organization is helping beauty professionals create affirming spaces where every person, regardless of gender identity or expression, feels safe, seen, and celebrated.
Every word used behind the chair carries meaning. Calling something a “men’s haircut” or a “ladies’ trim” might seem harmless, but for trans and nonbinary clients, it can be a painful reminder that they don’t fit neatly into traditional boxes. These small interactions can define whether someone feels welcome, or excluded.
Hair Has No Gender is challenging stylists to rethink outdated service structures. By removing gendered language and pricing based on length, texture, and time, salons can create systems that reflect people as they are, not as society has told them to be.
Through workshops and educational programs, Hair Has No Gender provides stylists with the tools to build truly inclusive spaces. Covering everything from new pricing structures, language sensitivity and pronoun awareness to client consultations and affirming care.
Jamie’s approach centers on empathy and curiosity, not shame. “This isn’t about being perfect,” Jamie says. “It’s about being aware, and willing to do better.”
According to the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI), nearly 1 in 5 Americans identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community, and 24% of Gen Z, who already make up 20% of the U.S. population, identify as LGBTQ+. This generation is shaping the future of beauty, demanding authenticity, inclusivity, and respect from the brands and stylists they support.
