Julianna Margulies and Jessica Pare rocked similar, modern takes on vintage hair styles with headbands as accessories at the 2013 SAG Awards.
Headbands are Back at the SAG Awards
In 2012, thin headbands made many appearances on the red carpet, especially in shorter styles worn by starlets like Michelle Williams and Charlize Theron. Nothing like your middle school accessory, the 21st century headband adds elegance and romance to any style. Take a cue from TV stars Julianna Margulies and Jessica Pare, who each rocked their own modern, 2013 interpretation of the headband on the Screen Actor's Guild Awards red carpet this week.
Let's check out these closer looks at the modern updates on vintage styles worn by Julianna and Jessica, with a few salon tips from the stylists who created them.
JULIANNA MARGULIES
To complement her black and lavender gown, celebrity stylist Sebastian Scolarici gave Julianna a sleek look in the front with '60s-inspired volume and cascading waves to her shoulders. Satin ribbon as a headband, close to Julianna's hair color, separates the look at the crown for a modern, polished update on a familiar look. Here's how Scolarici, who has styled Julianna for some of her best awards show looks, did it.
Scolarici prepped Julianna’s damp hair with a volume-boosting mousse and applied a root lifting spray to target volume at the crown.
After blow-drying smooth with a round brush, Scolarici separated Julianna's hair into five to six sections and curled individual pieces with a 1-inch-barrel curling iron.
While Julianna had her makeup applied, each curl was temporarily set in place with a roller pin.
Scolarici released the hair from roller pins and brushed through to create soft waves then Sebastian worked a frizz-taming serum through the hair to prevent flyways.
Next, Scolarici teased the hair at the crown to create height and volume.
A piece of black satin ribbon was used as a headband to separate the look, keeping the front of hair sleek and back of hair voluminous.
Scolarici finished the look by spraying a generous amount of hairspray to lock in the style while leaving hair brushable.
JESSICA PARE
Looks like Jessica and Julianna had the same idea for the SAG Awards: Higher! More volume! Vintage!
Jessica plays Don Draper's siren of a young wife on AMC's 1960s drama "Mad Men," and her vintage style on set often follows her to red carpet events and award shows with modern beehive-esque styles like this one. A properly place, subtle headband with gold accents at the crown help turn this style created by Marcus Francis from just another updo to a well-rounded look for the lady in green. "Jessica's dress was very classic, so I wanted the hair to feel timeless and regal, like that of Grace Kelly," Francis told InStyle. "Having a strong shape while wearing it up kept the feeling modern."
Salon tip: Francis sprayed Phyto Phytovolume Actif Maximizing Volume Spray from Jessica's roots to ends while the hair while was still damp
