A Smarter Approach to Color Services
The Express Color & Smoothing System combines two professional services into one efficient appointment:
KeraLuminous 10™ 10-Minute Express Permanent Color
Stylists can deliver vibrant, 100% gray coverage with long-lasting frizz control and shine—all in less time than a traditional color service. Results last up to six weeks, giving clients both speed and quality.
Tabatha’s Perspective
“When I saw this service in action—real stylists, real results—it clicked immediately,” Coffey shares. “Gray coverage is a foundational service in the salon; it’s what I call your ‘pay-the-mortgage’ client. This new system delivers consistent, vibrant color and adds a smoothing, color-locking treatment. Two high-performance services in the time it usually takes for one. That’s smart business for stylists and added value for clients.”
She continues: “Just like moisturizer maintains skin health, this treatment nourishes and protects the hair while delivering essential coverage. It’s a professional, elevated upgrade that enhances results, supports hair health, and increases stylist income. It’s a win-win.”
MODERN SALON: Sometimes stylists struggle with client care and business growth. How can this service help them earn more without burning out?
TABATHA COFFEY: For a long time, the philosophy has been that you either have to be fast or you have to be good—you couldn’t be both. I’ve never believed that. This system from Keratin proves that you can deliver exceptional color and smoothing results in a fraction of the time, without sacrificing quality. It’s about redefining efficiency and valuing time in our industry. Stylists are natural givers, but hustle culture often leads to burnout without more money in their pockets. This system helps them earn more while preserving their energy and creativity.

MS: You’ve spoken so much about building sustainable careers. How does this service align with that philosophy?
TC: Sustainability means building a career that doesn’t burn you out—financially, creatively, physically, and emotionally. This service helps by turning repeat appointments, like root coverage clients, into premium experiences. Instead of thinking, I need 12 new clients to make more money, stylists can look at the clients they already have and seamlessly integrate this service.
It’s about making the most of what’s already on the books, which is a sustainable approach.
MS: If you were coaching a stylist on offering this to their client, what script would you suggest?
TC: Keep it simple and honest. For example: “With today’s color service, I’d love to add a treatment that locks in vibrancy, smooths your hair, and keeps it healthy for up to six weeks—and we can do it right now. Do you have the time?”
When you frame it as part of client care—not as a sales pitch—clients see it as a natural extension of the service. I call it the new standard of color service. Clients want healthy, shiny, manageable hair, so positioning it as care, not an “extra,” makes it feel essential.
MS: How can innovations like this help salons stay competitive against DIY color?
TC: Clients don’t reach for box color because it’s better—they choose it because it’s fast and convenient. Research proves that. Innovations like this allow salons to meet that same demand for speed and convenience, but with professional-quality results no box can deliver. That’s how we win clients back—by giving them convenience and speed without cutting corners, while offering a premium, upgraded experience.

MS: Some stylists prefer working fast with many clients, while others prefer fewer, slower-paced appointments. How does this system benefit both?
TQ: The system works for every stylist. For high-volume stylists, it maximizes every hour. For those who prefer fewer clients, it elevates the quality of the experience and what they’re already offering. It empowers both approaches without compromising quality. At its core, it gives choice—and with choice comes more power.
MS: Change can be hard, especially when stylists are set in their routines. What advice would you give about embracing services that combine artistry with efficiency?
TC: Change is hard for all of us, even those of us who coach others to change. It’s ironic—we’re in an industry of change-makers, encouraging clients to transform, yet we’re often the most resistant. But the industry is moving, and clients’ expectations are evolving whether we do or not.
Today’s clients want convenience, speed, quality, and premium service. Embracing services like this doesn’t diminish artistry—it makes it more impactful and intentional. It’s about aligning artistry with what clients want now.
