Behind the Cover – November Modern Salon

It’s tough not to love April Barton. Smart, fun, talented; the celebrity designer, salon owner and reality star has made a name for herself as an editorial darling and men’s-grooming expert. Her clients (mostly men, mostly rockers) put their hair in her hands knowing that even though she cuts with giant shears while dancing around the head, the outcome will be positive.

Behind the Cover – November Modern SalonWith her reputation as the go-to gal for hot guy finishes, we were not surprised when dozens of male models turned up for the casting. Barton trimmed up just about every contender that walked through the door, knowing that even if she didn’t select him, he was at least cleaned up for his next casting.

Barton ultimately selected the models to best represent the three trends she believes are important right now: Surfer Rock, Classic and Clean, and Polished Punk. After a cut (and, in one case, color), she mixed and matched assorted Mitch products (the new Paul Mitchell men’s line) to define each look.

Behind the Cover – November Modern SalonAfter each model was shot separately, Barton asked how we all felt about shooting on the balcony of her salon, located around the corner in Suite 303 of the Chelsea Hotel. Photographer Roberto Ligresti, always ready to fi nd a new location, didn’t skip a beat and immediately packed up his equipment. As we all walked over, our Mitch Men caused a bit of stir on the street because they just looked so good—all courtesy, of course, April Barton.
