HOW TO: Dark Cherry

Dark Cherry by Amanda Perkins

Amanda Perkins (@aperky) of Platinum Salon Tampa (@cassandraplatinum) created this "dark cherry" finish that caught our eye on Instagram.

"This new guest, a beautiful mom of 1 year old twins, shared that she naturally did not have much time to keep up with her hair. It had been about 4 months since she had color done. She was looking for something different, but classy and expressed that she loves rich, dark reds." Perkins wanted to create something that would be easier for her to maintain and something that could be easily refreshed in 6 weeks. Perkins went to her color of choice in the Paul Mitchell line to make this happen. Here she offers the how to:

Regrowth was a level 6, and the mids and ends were a level 5.

Formula A - PM Shines XG 5N and 5RV equal parts with 10vol processing cream

Formula B - PM Synchro Lift using 20vol cream developer

Formula C - PM Shines 6RV 1oz 6R 1/2oz with Processing Liquid for a total of 3oz

Formula D - PM Inkworks equal parts of Red and Purple

Step 1: Divide the hair into the standard 4 quadrants. Apply Formula A, feathering down past the line of demarcation (about 4-5 inches).

Step 2: Create a horse shoe section on top of the head and place foils using Formula B, over-directing them forward and alternating between weaving and teasing.

Step 3: Balayage the remaining hair, bumping up the developer to 30 volume.

Step 4: Process for 30 minutes lifting to a level 8. Rinse and shampoo using PM Ultimate Color Repair shampoo. Towel dry well.

Step 5: Apply Formula C all over the hair at the shampoo bowl and process for 20 minutes. Rinse and shampoo.

Step 6: At the bowl, apply Formula D to damp hair, working through the length of the hair. ("We call this an ink manicure.")

Step 7: Allow to absorb for about 5 minutes. Rinse and apply conditioner (do not shampoo).
