Martin Parsons Martin Parsons, an updo artist, presenter, educator and author was able to squeeze in an interview with MODERN SALON after receiving a standing ovation at the most recent Intercoiffure show in New York City. Based in Canada, Parsons travels the world teaching hair stylists at all levels how to create the perfect look. Here, he shares his industry insights.
WHY I DRESS UP FOR SHOWS: I respect the hairdressing audiences, the beauty industry and how international visitors look at North American style.
MY FAVORITE ITEM OF CLOTHING: A sentimental pair of cufflinks.
MOST UPDOS I’VE DONE IN A DAY: 57
THE MOST IMPORTANT TOOL IN MY KIT: Band Aids and long pins.
THE SECRET TO FABULOUS UPDOS: Smoothing the hair with the comb flat on the section, and spraying in the direction the hair is moving.
I GOT INTO UPDOS BECAUSE: I love the architecture of an up style, and I wanted to be different at hairdressing shows. Plus I dream updos (sometimes I wake up in the morning and my sheets are in chignons).
THE MOST IMPORTANT THING ABOUT ADVANCED EDUCATION: Professional growth, personal confidence.
MY GREATEST EXTRAVAGANCE: Solitude.
THE BEST PART OF MY WORK IS: Laughing with hairdressers.
IF NOT HAIRDRESSING, I WOULD HAVE BECOME: Since I was eleven years old, this is all I have ever wanted to be.
MY SECRET WEAPON: The gowns I design and decorate for my presentations. The logic is: If the hair doesn’t work, maybe a fun and sparkly dress will.
MY SPECIAL CAUSE: To encourage hairdressers to be responsible for their own success, be proud of their profession and to talk each day with their families about their day at work, their importance to their community and their clients.
WHY YOUR SHOWS ARE SO POPULAR: They know there is a good chance they’ll have some laughs, pick up a ton of usable professional ideas, see some beautiful hair and be inspired.
