THE EVENT: Backstage at the Christian Siriano fashion show at
Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, NYC, February 2009. This was the first
fashion-week showing for the Project Runway superstar. THE SCOOP:
Siriano teamed with Aveda to make this first showing not only fierce
but fashion with a conscience. The designer and Aveda offered NYC tap
water in reusable, liter-sized, non-toxic aluminum bottles, eliminating
up to 400 plastic bottles. Siriano created a fur-free collection,
printed the programs and invitations on recycled paper, and all food
served backstage was organic and locally sourced.
THE ART OF THE LOOK: Jon Reymon, Artistic Director of the Aveda
Advanced Academy in New York, created the clean, sculpted, geometric
boxy chignon with an Egyptian feel. “It’s bold, yet elegant,” says
Reymon, surrounded by his team of 25 graduates of “Runway Styling,” a
two-day course at the Advanced Academy.
THE LAST WORD: Using the word of the season, Siriano described
the marriage of beauty and fashion as “Organic. You really can’t do
one without the other, can you,” states Siriano.
