1. Butterfl y wing sections are placed asymmetrically. In this
case the entire butterfl y is used, including two wings and
body, placed along the crown from the top to the occipital.
2. Begin by creating the base color. Blend equal parts 7RO
and 5K with 20-volume developer and begin application on
the scalp to midstrand—avoiding the butterfl y sections.
3. Add Blonding Cream with 20-volume developer midstrand
to ends. These color formulations are applied to all the hair
outside the butterfl y. Feather the second shade in to the
existing base shade. Color is separated with thermal paper.
4. While processing, create the butterfly shades. Start on the
scalp with the base shade used in step 2.
5. Then add Blonding Cream with 40-volume developer on the
midlengths in ¼-inch partings. Diffuse the shade to the base.
6. On the lengths of the butterfly section, use Silk Lift Strong
with 20-volume developer.
7. Diffuse the color to the midlengths. Add interest by diffusing
at different areas of the strand. Sometimes the color is applied
closer to the scalp, sometimes further along the section.
Process for 30 minutes, then shampoo and condition.
8. Apply gloss: At the base: Elumen with ½ BK@6 and
½ KK@all to make a brighter, more intense brown copper.
9. Three different shades are alternated within butterfl y. On
midstrands: alternate BK@9 with KK@all equal parts to
make an intense beige copper. One inch sections are
separated with thermal papers. In the next section apply
BK@9 with GK@all to make an intense beige gold copper.
The third shade is a diluted pink rose: AB@9 with PK@all.
Process for 15 to 30 minutes.

For this design, created exclusively for MODERN SALON Media, Goldwell's International Artistic Director Dimitrios Tsioumas took Goldwell's FasciNature’s butterfly concept to the extreme. ”Wings, as in butterfly wings, are the concept and the technique. How they are positioned is up to the artist. That is where he or she can get as simple or complex as desired.”
Tsioumas chose to go strong for this finish by taking the entire butterfly, including the body and all wings, to create this look. Multiple shades are used throughout, including a background shade and internal shading within each wing. Diffusion is as important as color selection. The finished result is beautiful and tasteful while staying true to the trend.
