HOW TO: Tribal Beauty
Babak

Erica Reynolds Keelen (@ericakeelen_hair_love), a Master Stylist and educator at Cortello Salon in Jacksonville Beach, Florida, remains eager to further her education by gaining experience with new and upcoming products, trends and techniques in hairdressing. In addition to working on the floor and mentoring apprentices through an extensive training program, Keelen has a genuine passion for editorial hairstyling and loves to put collections together. She was a finalist in Goldwell’s 2014 Color Zoom competition.

This past fall, at the new Goldwell Academy in NYC,  Keelen attended an “On Set” editorial hair workshop with Global Artistic Master of Goldwell, Dimitrios Tsioumas. This program is similar to MODERN'S photoshoot workshop: ARTIST SESSION.

For this shoot, Keelen pulled ideas from the “Colorfools” collection, which could be described as “pure, honest colors that like to reveal themselves on smooth, plain material.” She created her storyboard by marrying ideas from “Colorfools” with a technique inspired by modern tribal trends in fashion "The overall goal was to change the model’s entire look without modifying any of the natural hair, which meant carrying out the look on extensions that were prepared prior to the shoot."

PREP:

Keelen applied Goldwell Elumen to each extension weft using a feathering technique.

HOW TO:

  1. Pull a ponytail on top of the head.
  2. Braid ponytail tightly to create a secure base.
  3. Double up the braid by folding in half.
  4. Secure the braid with ace bandage as tight as possible, leaving 1” of the braid showing out of the top.
  5. Wrap extensions around the 1” of the hair that was kept out of the bandage.
  6. Secure extensions in place and continuously wrapped the bandage higher to disguise the extension wefts.
  7. Style the ponytail with a micro crimper.
  8. Attach fringe extension piece and detail to frame her face shape.
