Unless your clients live a media-free life, they have seen images of long-haired celeb lovelies opting for a shorter, sassy cut as we move into the New Year. We've always loved Charlize, but now we also have Miley, Beyonce, Pam Anderson, Jennifer Lawrence and even Jennifer Aniston chopped off inches of her trademark mane. Mirza Batanovic, Eufora Global Team educator, talks about how stylists can consult with clients to see if they are ready to make the cut.
WHAT IS THE FIRST THING TO CONSIDER AND DISCUSS?
The first thing you should do when a client is interested in potentially cutting their hair is to evaluate their lifestyle. How much time are they willing to spend styling their hair? Short hair has to be maintained and styled more. Another important question to ask the client is why they want to cut their hair shorter. If it is an emotional action, they may not like it in a week. However, if they have been thinking about cutting it for a while, then most likely they will love it.The stylist and the client should think things through before deciding which short hair cut is right.
HOW CAN YOU HELP THEM PICK THE CUT THAT IS RIGHT FOR THEM?
After you have evaluated this, I would go through photos and find people with similar face shape, skin tone, hair texture, etc. Having your client show you what they want and making suggestions based on their characteristics will help ensure everyone is pleased with the result.
Now it’s time to make the cut. I always recommend leaving it a bit longer at first and then touching the style up once it’s dry or having them come back in three weeks once they are accustomed to a shorter style and then take it even shorter. For those who don’t style their hair often, avoid sharp lines and heavy weight lines. For these clients, you want to create more of a seamless, blended and layered option, no matter how short the hair is. This will help the cut style itself.
