STMNT Grooming Expands into Shave Care
STMNT Grooming Goods is expanding into the shave care category with three new additions to its lineup.
MODERN talks texture trends for winter and styling with wigs and extensions with texture expert, Tippi Shorter.

Tippi Shorter demos a textured cut at Aveda Mid-America in Cincinnati, October, 2016.
When MODERN saw Tippi Shorter, Aveda global artistic director for textured hair, on stage at Aveda Mid-America in October 2016, she was dishing on texture tricks and celebrity styling. Her work has graced the covers of top fashion magazines and celebrities including Alicia Keys, Rihanna, Lady Gaga And Jennifer Hudson, so there's not doubt that she knows a thing or two about the care and styling of various hair textures.
Shorter has been a primary force in the development of a texture curriculum for Aveda, which she calls Architexture. “It’s about foundational shapes,” says Shorter, “A balance between science—curl type, pattern and shrinkage—and art, or rather, the shape your client wants.”
Modern got in touch with Shorter post-Mid-America to get the scoop on texture trends for winter months and styling options available to clients of all textures.
MS: Why is texture an important category for stylists to study? What is covered in your textured hair curriculum?
TS: More than 60% of the global population has textured hair and more and more people want to learn about their hair and wear it in natural styles, so as the stylist, we really need to be ahead of that curve.
I currently have two classes. Texture101 is the absolute basics and fundamentals of understanding textured hair, as well as basic styling. This is great for people who have never had their hands in hair more textured than wavy. The new class is Beyond Basics. It's the "what's next" in textured hair styling with a focus on curls and coils. I'm also working on a cutting and hair coloring class specific for textured hair.
MS: What texture trends do you see emerging for fall and winter?
TS: Deeper hues will be very popular for winter as well as stronger shapes. Textured hair has always been pretty free flowing; stronger shapes just take it up a notch.
MS: Are wigs and extensions a good option for holiday styling?
TS: Wigs and extensions are always great options for people with very dry or damaged hair during the cooler seasons. This allows the hair a break while still having amazing style.
MS: How can clients keep natural hair healthy under a wig?
TS: Making sure hair is fully conditioned and constantly moisturized under wigs is important to maintaining healthy hair.
MS: What types of products are essential to keeping curly hair healthy during winter months?
TS: Leave-in conditioners are great and I also love to use Aveda Be Curly Style-Prep for moisturizing the hair. And oil moisturizers like Aveda Dry Remedy Daily Moisturizing Oil are great. Anything that hydrates hair is key.
