Clients with deep, raven tones should be using green shampoo, conditioner and masks to neutralize any underlying red pigment. The Matrix Total Results Dark Envy system offers a solution.

Before Total Results Dark Envy—see the brassy red undertones?

With painstaking effort, you’ve convinced your blonde and silver haired clients that purple shampoos, conditioners and masks are the answer to keeping their color cool and free of unwanted yellow undertones. And hopefully you’ve also convinced your highlighted brunette clients that blue shampoos, conditioners and masks are the answer to maintaining those creamy beige J-Lo hues while forbidding brassy undertones from taking hold. Well now there’s a new toning solution in town, and your job, should you decide to accept it, is to convince your dark-haired beauties to use green shampoo, conditioner and masks to maintain their deep, raven tones.
WHY GREEN?
Let’s run through a quick review of basic color theory. “We know that the colors that sit opposite each other on the color wheel are neutralizing,” explains Donna Mann, Director of Educational Development for Matrix. “So purple or violet neutralizes yellow, which is why purple shampoo is perfect for cool blonde and silver clients. And blue neutralizes orange, which is why blue shampoo is the go-to for keeping unwanted brassy tones out of cool and neutral brunette tones.”
The next question, therefore, is how to neutralize red undertones? And the answer is green. Makeup artists routinely use green foundations to eliminate ruddy tones in skin. So using a green shade to neutralize the underlying red pigment that appears when dark hair is lightened by chemicals, sunlight, hard water, thermal tools, etc., becomes logical.

THE DARK ENVY LINEUP
In his Elements Salon in Brooklyn, where he cares for a broad range of multi-cultural clients, owner and Matrix Artistic Director Robert Santana’s dark-haired customers often complain about the red undertones that pop up in their hair. Now he has an easy solution—he recommends the new Matrix Total Results Dark Envy system. The system keeps dark hair rich, shiny and on-tone thanks to the highest concentration of red-neutralizing dyes. It’s the first range from Matrix that neutralizes red undertones to enrich dark hair color levels 1 to 4. The Dark Envy collection includes:
Dark Envy Shampoo. A green formula that neutralizes red undertones and adds deep cool tones to dark hair. It contains one of the highest concentrations of red-reversing green pigment and is suitable for natural and color-treated hair.
Dark Envy Conditioner. A rich conditioning formula that hydrates and softens hair, enhances manageability and imparts a glossy finish.
Dark Envy Mask. An in-salon treatment and also for use at home. This highly pigmented mask provides instant neutralization of red undertones—results are visible in just five minutes. It also provides deep hydration and nutrition for dark hair. It can be used on natural hair that has been oxidized by heat, UV exposure or chlorine; or on hair that has been chemically lightened.
“At first some of my clients were startled by the green color of the shampoo and mask,” Santana says. “But when I explain the color science behind the products, they get it. And usually after just one use, they see rich, glossy, neutralizing results.”
Here are a few tips when recommending Dark Envy: Because the shampoo and mask deposit green pigment, it’s important to wear gloves when applying these products. Also try to keep them from coming in contact with skin and scalp. And keep Dark Envy away from light and gray hair, unless the desired result is a green hue!
Dark Envy joins the Total Results quick toning family which includes Total Results So Silver, a system of violet shampoo, conditioner and mask that keeps blonde, silver and platinum hair free of unwanted yellow undertones; and Total Results Brass Off, a blue shampoo, conditioner and mask collection that bans unwanted brassy undertones on lightened brown hair.
“With the Total Results color neutralization options, I can ensure all my color remains on-point between salon visits,” Santana says. “That keeps my clients happy, which is the best thing for my business!”
