Inspired by the fashion runways of New York City, Paris and Milan, along with steady world travel, Ian Michael Black, Aveda global artistic director, hair color, is the expert in color. Here he shares his predictions on the hair color trends that will be hot this spring and summer.
THE HAIR COLOR
“I love to draw inspiration from my travels,” Black says. “I see so many inspiring places and vibrant colors and color combinations that I can bring back and apply to hair colors.” Black says the hair color of the season will be about going for wearable bold color choices in both reds and blues.
For reds, Black says that there will be a plethora of rich exotic hues with vibrant red shades leading the pack. “With Aveda’s new red base in the Aveda Full Spectrum Deep Hair Color we will be able to really bring reds to the next level of intensity and vibrancy – ranging from a very soft red with saturated color to a much brighter red that really takes center stage,” Black says.
Ian notes that the trend of silvery gray hair color will also be intensified this season to a sleek and gorgeous steel blue. “The blue of the season isn’t about being wild or different; it’s a really chic, prestige looking blue. It has a cool quality to it that we haven’t seen in a long time,” Black says. “And the color is for anyone that wants to feel bold and empowered with their hair color.”
THE MAKEUP
With a season about intense and bold choices in hair color, Janell Geason, Aveda global artistic director, makeup says the makeup is more nuanced with a varying level of brights, to not take away from the hair. “It’s about pairing subtle hues with vivid pinks for the next chapter in the ’no makeup’ look,” Geason says.
The key color trends for the Spring/Summer 2016 season include creamy and opaque tints that are stronger than white, but lighter than pastels; and blossoming pinks and oranges featuring ochre-based pales with fresh, almost neon-pinks for creating pragmatically chic looks.
“It’s about elevating that barely-there look with color,” Geason says. “We are using makeup to create shapes and enhancing natural features. The makeup is used to bring out beautiful, striking features, and key pops of colors for the face that beautifully complement the hair.”
“This is a very pretty approach to color for the face and lends well to a polished, chic look perfect for the spring and summer months and the pinks add to that seasonal need for a pop of color. These pretty palettes will look great on the pale skin of spring and the sun-kissed skin of summer,” Geason says.
Here Geason shares four Spring/Summer 2016 makeup trends for a flawless pretty season of fun in the sun:
1.Imperfect Color-Blocking—This bold-but-messy application will come to life through irregular chunks of turquoise on the eyes and orange or bold mauves applied to the lips. Application is haphazard showing that you’re just having too much fun outside to have perfect makeup. Try petal essence eye definer in sea fern with nourish-mint sheer mineral lip color in sheer clove, a cool, medium sand. The trick is not trying to create a perfect application.
2. Unexpected Color and Texture—For a season of bright color and texture, think about unexpected combinations. Place poppy brights on the lips, like nourish-mint rehydrating lip glaze in cherry nectar next to antique reds on the lids or an ultra-matte hue like petal essence single eye colors in desert clay, a cool, burnt orange with creamy matte finish. Be sure the lips are shiny and lacquered with the matte lids to create interesting mash-ups of color that feel fresh and new.
3. Milky Opaques—Go for buttery-light tints, which remind me of exotic creamy summer drinks like an Indian Lassi, to create a beautifully rich and smooth finish on the skin—a nice contrast to the season’s otherwise bold-and-bright tendencies.
4. Pink-Orange Florals—Think in terms of some of your favorite floral bouquets to turn your lips into fresh spring blossoms. Use neon pinks and pale oranges for a perfect pairing. First line lips with the nourish-mint lip liner in spring rose; follow with a coat of nourish-mint smoothing lip color in pink peppertree, a warm, bold pink and then finish with nourish-mint rehydrating lip glaze in rose dusk, a cool apricot.
