Inside Look

Model selection is usually the most difficult part of any shoot. The model may have the right face and hair, but is unwilling to change her look. Or the model may want a big makeover, but her face and hair color/texture is not appropriate for the desired finish. As most session artists know, it’s like looking for that proverbial needle in a haystack.

That was certainly the case for this cover and feature, with the added challenge of looking for three models: a blonde, a brunette, a redhead. Fortunately for Matrix artists Brian and Sandra Smith, and Dan Csicsai, we hit the jackpot. Not only did we get the perfect blonde and redhead, we even met with model Tetiana who was looking for a dramatic makeover for her extra long, virgin hair.

“Well…not too dramatic,” says Matrix Artistic Director Sandra Smith. “Brian and I knew the cut was going to be dramatic enough so I understood my color design would have to be tasteful and pretty. She is young and a model and I wanted to give her a low maintenance and flattering look.”

Because the color was so important to these finishes, Smith decided to break out her new favorite color product: ColorInsider by Matrix which is making its debut exclusively on the cover and in the pages of this month’s MODERN.

“I am so excited to introduce ColorInsider to the hair color world,” says Sandra Smith. “It is quite special. Traditional ammoniated color opens the cuticle and deposits color between those surface openings. The Color Injection System, one of the most important technological aspects of this line, injects color deep inside the hair’s core without disturbing the cuticle. The color processes from the inside out, with minimal stress on the hair surface, leaving it healthy and shiny. The hair is protected and its integrity is maintained. The results are amazing.”

At the end of the day, after the dramatic cut and color designs, especially on our brunette, there were plenty of oohs and ahhs all over the studio.

“But, of course my favorite,” says Smith, “was the reaction from Tetiana. Like the rest of us, she is thrilled with her new look.”
