The high pony is a youthful profile that lends itself to bridal styling. It looks beautiful in photos, it can create a tiny 'pull' on the face for a lifted look, and it works for boho, traditionally romantic, or even vintage and rockabilly brides. Every bride can say "I do" to this trending wedding style.
Caralee Pridemore, Sam Villa Ambassador and Founder of @sweetlypinnedbycaralee, an on-location wedding hair and updo specialist, is seeing it more and more as bridal season shifts into high gear.
“So far this year I’ve had three brides requesting this waterfall ponytail at their hair trial. I think it’s such a beautiful look, however it does require extremely thick hair which can be created with a texture iron or extensions,” explains Pridemore, who is also a MODERN SALON 100 Honoree. “This style looks great with a strapless dress or one with a lower neckline…anything satin and clean looking.”
1. Prep hair using a Sam Villa Texture Professional Texture Iron all over. The above bride had thick hair, which is ideal for the style. If someone has curly hair or signs of frizz, the hair should be pre-straightened.
2. Backcomb the crown area and create two ponytails, one lower and one higher.
3. Clip up the top ponytail and start curling the bottom ponytail away from the face going to the center of the head with a Sam Villa Artist Series 2-in-1 Marcel Iron & Wand 1.5” (the extended heating element provides more surface area for styling longer hair). Take the right side back towards the center and the left side back to the center and then pinch and pull apart the hair with volume powder. If adding extensions, do that now. Place the clip-in extensions between both ponytails, positioning some wefts upwards and others down to create full volume and coverage.
4. Repeat same steps with the top ponytail and lay that hair around the bottom ponytail making sure all the curls are expanded. Use a wax or some sort of smoothing cream to keep the curls frizz free.
5. After all the hair is placed in the right position, neatly laying on top of each other, take hair from the bottom of the top ponytail and wrap it around both ponytails and pin in place. 6. Pull out and sculpt face framing pieces for a dimensional textured look.
“You can add pearls or other accessories," adds Pridemore. "I've done a longer veil placed on top and it looks beautiful."
