When we were promoting February as American Heart Month, we heard from our friends at Wella, because last year’s winner of the Wella “Supports Your Cause” Charity Challenge was recognized for raising awareness about heart health. The Charity Challenge, part of Wella’s Hairdressers at Heart initiative, awarded the $10,000 grand prize to event planner Maria Dietz and co-owner Nicole Joeright at Raun Hairdressers and Day Spa in Willoughby, Ohio. Maria Dietz used part of the prize money to start the ColorMeRedEvent.com website, which directs salons in how to hold a similar event.
“My simple, easy-to-follow teaching techniques target hair salon owners and team members to successfully master a series of steps to adapt Color Me Red to support the American Heart Association, organize health education for their client base, generate media coverage and sell sponsorships,” says Dietz. “I believe every hair salon and spa needs to get onboard with Color Me Red!”
Maybe you have a different favorite cause. Another way to make a difference is to enter this year’s Charity Challenge. Submit a video that demonstrates your, or your salon’s, compelling dedication to a community outreach program of any kind. Again this year, the top winner will receive $10,000, with another $33,000 in grants awarded to runners-up at a minimum grant of $1,000. Deadline is April 1; winners will be announced in June.
