How to Build a Sustainable Beauty Career Without Burning Out
LifeSpa leader Ali Yanez explains why strong mentorship, predictable income, meaningful recognition and the right work environment help beauty professionals build careers that last.
Renya Xydis (Wella) and Marian Newman (MAC nails) created great beauty for the Sass and Bide SS 2014 collection presented at NYFW

The hair and nails were simple, chic and sophisticated for the SS2014 Sass and Bide collection presented this week at New York Fashion Week. Modern stopped by and met with lead hair designer Renya Xydis (for Wella) and Marian Newman (MAC nails).
For hair, Xydis lacquered the hair to the nape, held it in place with a tape and then secured with two barrettes. "It's cool but elegant," she says. "This look is simple and sleek and totally enhances the beautiful Sass and Bide fashion."
Marian Newman finished up the nail look quickly and granted Modern an exclusive interview. Here we learn about so much more than the finished nail look. The biggest buzz was about her case which she recreates for each show and each city. "For Sass and Bide we are all about gorgeous, healthy, glossy and super manicured nails," she said as she pointed to the fresh nail on her case. "It's beautiful." What ISN'T beautiful is her pet peeve: "Why are manicurists placing gel manicures on models who are going from show to show? It's just not fair...not to the next manicurist or to the girl!" Newman finished with her thoughts about the importance of manicurists participating in fashion week. "Clients love to know that their manicurist participates in fashion week," she says. "It's a great opportunity...and absolutely worth it."
