From Police Officer to Makeup Artist: Putting Down the Badge to Pursue a Passion for Esthetics

“I want to merge my passions of helping people. A large part of my job is making women feel powerful, strong, independent, beautiful, and loved and I feel like makeup can give women that same feeling of confidence.”

Beauty Changes Lives (BCL)is a nonprofit driven to make the beauty profession a first-choice career by empowering individuals with mentorship, inspiration and scholarships.  The MUD Makeup Scholarship Fall 2018 winner  is Shelby Mellard from Derby, KS. After earning a degree in criminal justice, Shelby served as a Wichita Police Department officer, where she often saw the “ugly” side of life, including acts of domestic violence. In her scholarhip application video, Shelby shares how working with victims of domestic violence helped her see how she could merge her passion for helping and beautifying lives.

“This scholarship is making it financially possible for me to put down my badge and pursue my dream of a career in esthetics,” says Shelby. “I’ve been serving my community on the police force but now I want to serve them by beautifying them. Sometimes outer beauty makes it easier for people to see their inner beauty.” Shelby is a student of Eric Fisher Academy
