L'Oreal Professionnel Artist Drew Schaefering has learned that creating volume at the crown is not only on trend, but it creates a beautiful shape and can balance just about any look.
"To build a shape, backcombing is essential," he says. "Although this appears to be a simple process, it takes practice to do it properly."
Schaefering takes fine sections and directs forward slightly. "For proper lift, you must pack the hair tightly," he says. "The tigher I pack, the stronger the shape."
Schaefering works back and forth within wide sections, packing the hair with a fine tooth comb. He then takes another section in front of the packed sections which he backcombs lightly to use as a softer veil to the front.
