Hop on board the USS IWO JIMA, the biggest ship at New York’s Fleet Week, with MODERN’s Beauty and Fashion Director Maggie Mulhern in last week’s Modern Salon TV episode!

Since 1984, New York City has held Fleet Week to honor the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. The week featured extensive military demonstrations, as well as the opportunity for the public to tour some of the visiting ships.
If you have ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes in a military barbershop, you are in for a treat. MODERN's Beauty and Fashion Director Maggie Mulhern got the exclusive story with the help of SHStrelow, a barber on the USS IWO JIMA, about how they conduct their services.
According to SHStrelow, there are normally four barber stations set up with two barbers working at a time. The barbers use clippers (10 different kinds of blades), small and large combs, and edgers to trim around a person's ears.
So what about the women? What kind of hair cut do they receive? Well, for the women that do come in, they get a trim, or a shorter cut. They also shave the back of their neck for the finishing touches. In the military, it is also expected that everyone wears a natural hair color, so they do not have colors, styles or shampooing at the stations.

Here are some barbering rules that you might find interesting (seen briefly in the episode):
*Barbers are prohibited from shaving customers and are forbidden to remove ingrown hairs, squeeze pimples or blackheads or treat any person medically.
*A barber's uniform consists of a clean jacket and clean trousers. Appearance at all times should be neat and tidy.
*A barber's hands and fingernails should be clean at all times.
*The barber is forbidden to cut the hair of anyone who has any kind of disease or sore on the scalp or the back of the neck within the hairline. The barber will obtain the name, rank, division of any person who comes in the barbershop who is evidently afflicted with a skin or scalp disease or with sores or boils. This information will be reported to the medical officers.
