Doug O'Connell (@dougoconnell13), a balayage, color and extension expert at Salon 5150, Brea, CA., says his "client came into me wanting a change. I had done her before and we always do a white platinum all over. This time she wanted something dark and silvery."

Here he shares the details for this transformation:

STEP 1: Apply Aveda 1N to the base and then go through and apply the same shade to desired panels of the hair.

STEP 2: Leave the remaining panels out of the platinum and blend the base down a little to melt. Process for 35 minutes and rinse with cool water. Allow the level 1N to bleed onto the platinum panels at the bowl to create a silvery tone.

STEP 3: Shampoo with UNITE Blonda purple toning shampoo to "ash everything out". Blow dry and style with a 1 1/2 inch curling iron.
