Transitioning from Foil to Balayage: The Why, the How

Geysha Tomassone (@geyshaloveshair) loves to do a foil-to-balayage transition.

"It's a great way to introduce clients to a bayalage, giving me a chance to explain the benefits," Tomassone says. "I always show the client the line of demarcation from a foil grow-out and tell them this technique will give them a softer, more natural grow-out."

This particular client needed something low-maintenance and something new.

"To create this transition, especially from a heavy foil blonde, you have to incorporate a lowlight," Tomassone says. "This will help give depth back into her hair, dimension, and also help erase lines from foils. When choosing a lowlight formula, I like to formulate a color with the same level to a half level lighter of her natural and with a gold base so the blonde doesn't grab drabby.  I love to bayalage not only using a lightener but with color as well. I find it to be the most natural looking."

Here Tomassone shares the formula used to help this client transition:

Get the look: Transitioning from foil to balayage

Formula A: 1 1/2 oz of  Guy Tang Pravana Bayalage High developer formula + 1 scoop of Guy Tang Pravana Bayalage lightner + 1/8 oz of Olaplex.
Formula B:Wella Color Touch 1/2 oz 8/73 + 1/2 7/73  +  2 oz of 1.9%
Formula C: 1oz 9P Redken Shades EQ + 1 oz Clear + 2oz of Processing Solution

STEP 1: Section hair in quadrants from center back and ear to ear. Taking slightly diagonal horizontal 1 1/2 section, bayalage with Formula A.  Alternate every third section with Formula B. "While using a color to bayalage I comb through the section to ensure even distribution."

STEP 2: Process for 45 minutes. Shampoo and towel dry.
