A coveted tool in French makeup artists' arsenals, micellar water is just starting to hit the mainstream stateside. So what exactly is it and what does it do? Natalie Soto-Carlisle, global educator at Jane Iredale, explains the tough, yet gentle product and how it can benefit a client's overall skincare routine and makeup prep for spring and beyond.

MODERN SALON: How does micellar water work?

Natalie Soto-Carlisle: Micellar water is a magical potion that completely removes makeup, dirt, and oil from the skin like a magnet without stripping your complexion, or leaving an oily residue.

MS: Why are we just starting to hear about it so much? Why should makeup artists add it to their own arsenals?

NSC: This is a cleanser that many makeup artists working the Paris runways have been using for years, but thanks to online media and the fascination of Parisian women's skincare routines, micellar water has now gained international attention. It is definitely a must have for any professionals’ arsenal. It allows you to cleanse and refresh the skin without having to have a water source.

MS: Jane Iredale is launching a skincare trio which includes a micellar water cleanser, toner and moisturizer. How will these products benefit a client's spring skincare routine?

NSC: Spring is the perfect season to get the glowy complexion one loses in the winter months. This trio works well to increase hydration without an oily residue.

MS: How can this line help prep clients' skin for makeup application?

NSC: This trio works in tandem with one another to help cleanse, restore and prepare the surface of the skin to help makeup go on smoother and last longer. With ultra-hydrating and nourishing ingredients, moisture on the surface of the skin is locked in without the greasy feel, allowing for mineral makeup to adhere longer.
