As hard as it is to believe, John Paul DeJoria, CEO and co-founder of
John Paul Mitchell Systems, has never…that’s right NEVER…been honored
by the salon industry! He has received awards and nods worldwide for
his charitable work but has yet to be acknowledged by the salon world
for his contributions. The members of Intercoiffure
America/Canada decided to right that wrong and gave him the VISIONARY
OF THE YEAR AWARD at the most recent Trend Luncheon held this past
Monday at the Waldorf Hotel in New York City.
Battledress, a new salon clothier, just launched the most bad-ass camo-infused salon aprons. Decked out in dog tags, band patches (like David Bowie, ACDC, and other amazingly delicious bands), chains and studs, these things rock!
ARTIST SESSION, Modern’s exclusive seminar and photoshoot experience,
held its third session which turned out to be another success. Salon
owners and stylists from around the US gathered to learn how to break
in to the freelance world of hairstyling. In addition to learning the
in’s and out’s of the studio world, each artist selected a model and then prepared her for the
set.
The holiday season is about to kick into high gear and the salon will
be buzzing with non-stop blow dryers as you enter your busiest time of
year. But the busy season isn’t just about seeing clients back
to back for 12 hours straight. Put your focus on these three concepts
and not only will your days will fly by, you’ll find yourself in a much
better mood by the time you’re headed home.

If you ask salon owner Juan Florentino to describe his 3,900-square foot salon in Beverly Hills, he would say “modern, Hollywood, glam.” And that description couldn’t be more accurate. The Juan Florentino salon, in the heart of star-studded Beverly Hills, goes to great lengths for full client comfort: even offering clients disconnected VIP rooms for total privacy needs and a backdoor entrance for full seclusion. Sprinkled throughout the space are paintings of faces from pop culture: Elvis, Marilyn, Bob Dylan and Elizabeth Taylor.
Hairdresser Lauren Thompson and make up artist April Caruso just
graduated from Parisian Beauty Academy in Hackensack, New Jersey, and
while they are each thrilled to be working in great salons (Thompson at
OC61 in NYC and Caruso at Caru in Hoboken, NJ), each wants to build a
portfolio in hopes to start doing some freelance and magazine work.
Dear BioSilk, Thank you for making my hair feel/look/smell beautiful. I think I’m falling for you. With love, Alison Shipley xoxox
Beauty/fashion/music... we are in a blended world. Many stylists and
most salons have learned that the music we listen to or play has become
a large part of how we brand ourselves or our spaces. Wear Your Music®
has teamed up with more than 150 musicians to create one-of-a-kind
fashion accessories using the recycled guitar strings donated from an
eclectic roster of the world’s top recording artists.
I just learned about these very cool lashes by Xtended Beauty Lashes. They are a great way to have your clients (or yourself!) look like a million bucks. The "Dazzler" strip features a hint of sparkle...the Tinseltown strip is accented with twinkling crystals and the poison strip has a hint of blue tint in a criss cross pattern.

La James International College (LJIC), one of the largest beauty school
groups in the mid west, held it ‘s annual student conference last week
called “Trend Vision”. I was there and was impressed by the excitement
and enthusiasm shared by the more than 700 gathered at the Palace
Theater in the Adventure Land Park in Des Moines, Iowa. This event was
eye opening and inspiring and I was honored to be a guest.
