An Environmental Lesson

About 20 miles outside Minneapolis lies the city of Blaine, Minnesota. At first, it appears the same as any other far-flung Midwestern suburb. But then you stumble onto the Aveda campus and realize this is no ordinary place.

Bring on the Bling

It's early...I know...to start stocking up for the holiday client rush, but you may want to check out BLING STRANDS. These cool semi-perm (3 - 4 weeks) "knot in" sparkly strands come in 24 shades (including silver and fuchsia) and could be a perfect addition to any of your holiday designs. They are made from metallic fibers and survive "medium" heat. This is a new, fun SALON service, even though the website mentions that the client can do it herself....(no way). Check it out.

When Bad Turns to Worse

You're having one of those days. You're late to work, your first client never showed, you dropped some mustard on your pants at lunch. Grrrrr. Just when you think things can't get worse, you’re mixing color for a client, you drop the bowl and the color goes everywhere, all over her new designer purse. With a bad day, when it rains it pours.

Curly Cue

I never wear my hair curly—if I do, it’s because I’m vacationing on a beach, my electricity is out, or because I’m extremely lazy. I just haven’t embraced my hair’s texture much.

A Curl Revelation

I’m having a good hair day! When I wear my hair curly (its natural state), this doesn’t happen too often. It frizzes, expands, tangles and does everything else it’s not supposed to do.

Education in a Very Cool Place

I've been chatting with New York salon owner Cristiano Cora about his latest educational workshops held in his stunning Greenwich Village Cristiano Cora studio. I haven’t been there myself, but the images are amazing. The Studio is a sleek modernist space on the second floor of a great looking building in a trendy neighborhood. Who could ask for more?

A Salon Soiree to Remember

On a warm Southern California evening, the West Coast’s leading hairstylists came calling at Jason Lara and David Abrams’ beautifully minimalist salon, Luxelab, in Santa Monica to see legendary hairstylist Oribe introduce his latest products.

Clipa

My heart breaks every time I see a client place her purse on the floor and watch as hair or color falls in/on/around it. I just got a release about the “Clipa”, a little hook device that connects the strap of a purse, bag, briefcase, backpack or umbrella to anything elevated to keep it out of “danger”.

How to Make Your Future a “Perfect 10”

There are a few smart things we can do to help ensure our success behind the chair, and pre-booking salon guests before they leave is definitely one of the easiest ways. Simply ask guests, during the service or at check out, when it would be best to schedule services to maintain their hair (with your professional guidance, of course).

Knock my socks off!

In November, I am getting married! My fiancé and I are planning a traditional wedding -- big church, lots of guests, huge bridal party and a big bash at a downtown hotel afterwards.

Smooth Operator

I just recently tried Aveda’s Smooth Infusion Glossing Straightener, the newest addition to their Smooth Infusion line. Usually, I’m devoted to specific products when it comes to fighting humidity, but I decided to try out this new product on one of the most humid days the Chicago summer has seen and give it a test drive.
