If you follow hair pages on Instagram, chances are you’ve seen Farrukh Shamuratov’s work on the explore page under “Videos you might like.” While his hometown is in Russia, Shamuratov recently moved to Los Angeles and spends more time living out of a suitcase than anything—teaching master classes in Germany, Italy, France, Litvia, Spain, Russia, Dubai, Turkey, Tunisia, Ukraine, Belorussia, Kazakstan, Uzbekistan and Mexico City, hosting up to 700 students at a time all hungry to learn from the updo master himself.
Both his mother and father are hairdressers, so he got his start in the industry at home. Then, he went to Nevskiy Berega in St. Petersburg, Russia, for formal hairdressing education. “The biggest ‘schooling’ for me is participating in competitions,” he says. “I took part in more than 100 championships, competitions and contests,” earning first place in many including a first place in OMC Europe championship in 2010.”
