One of MODERN's favorite celeb artists, Dean Banowetz, has come out with a must-read for your daddy clients. The Dean's List of Daddy Dos is written by Banowetz to help all non-hairdresser fathers develop some basic skills on styling their daughters' hair.
Banowetz is concerned for the dads who "cringe at the idea of tackling their daughter’s tangles, let alone a French braid for school pictures or a ballerina bun for the recital," he says. The Dean's List of Daddy Dos contains instructions on 30 basic hairdos, including everything from ponytails to braids and buns. Banowetz breaks down each style in an easy step-by-step format. He offers expert tips on every aspect of layman hairdesign including how to create the perfect toolkit filled with all the necessary styling tools, accessories and hair products.
“This book was written for all the husbands, boyfriends, fathers and even ladies who don’t possess an inherent knack for the art of hair,” Banowetz says about the book, which comes with crayons so kids can color the black-and-white illustrations.
Banowetz, known as the Hollywood hair guy, has expertise on many levels. He's an Emmy-nominated celebrity hairstylist who has worked on some of the biggest shows on television, including American Idol, Dancing with the Stars, X Factor and Grease Live. Banowetz was just named the lead hairdresser on So You Think You Can Dance, which, in a stroke of good timing, is featuring kids this season. His celebrity clients include Britney Spears, Cheryl Hines, Ellen Degeneres, Simon Cowell, Kirstie Alley, Leeza Gibbons, Ryan Seacrest, Jane Lynch and Zac Efron.
MODERN: Why did you write this book?
BANOWETZ: Being the 13th of 15 children, I grew up listening to my sisters and sisters-in-law complaining that their husbands never help with the kid’s hair. I also have a bunch of double dads and double moms that kept asking me for pointers and how they weren’t nervous about raising a child but they were very nervous about trying to do their hair!
MODERN: What have you found to be the biggest challenge for the non-hairdressing parents when it comes to hairstyling?
BANOWETZ: The biggest challenge is the dads don’t want to mess up, and they want it to be perfect. They don’t realize that it doesn’t matter if the ponytail is messed up; it is the quality time that you are spending with your child that is important. It is all about bonding. The conversation and ponytail will get better and better over time.
MODERN: What can a professional hairdresser learn from this?
BANOWETZ: Sometimes the most important thing is not doing the hair; it is the quality one-on-one time we spend with our clients. Of course they come for the hair service, but they are also coming to you because you are fulfilling something in them. The relationship can last a lifetime.
MODERN: Why should a professional hairdresser advise his/her clients to buy the book?
BANOWETZ: This book is a great way for parents to take an active roll in their childrens' lives. The book is also a coloring and activity book to keep the child busy so the dad/mom can concentrate on doing their hair.
