Haley Banks  (@hairbyhaleyb) of Atelier by Square Salon, Las Vegas, NV, says her new client found her on Instagram. "Her previous hair was a dark brown she did herself. Previous colors had included black, red, and green over the past 7 years."

It took Banks 7 and a half hours to turn her in to her desired emerald green. Here she shares the how-to:

Step 1: Apply Rusk Elimin8 from mid shaft through ends (avoiding the uncolored root area). Place under heat with cap for 20 minutes. Shampoo three times with clarifying shampoo. Dry completely.

Step 2: Apply a full head of American Balayage (hair painting in foils) using Wella Blondor and 30 volume, adding Brazilian Bond Builder (B3) to the lightener formula to preserve the condition of the hair. Process for 45 minutes. Shampoo.

Step 3: Apply Wella Blondor Extra Cool Lightener and 40 volume through her lower midshaft and ends to get her as cool and light as possible (approximately 10 minutes). Shampoo and do not condition. Dry the hair. ("She reached level 9 in her lightest areas and as dark as a level 6 towards her ends. Rather then toning this all out I saw a possibility for a dimensional 'natural' looking green.") Shampoo and dry the hair.

Step 4: From root to top of mid shaft apply the first green formula (all Pravana): 2 tubes Green, 1 tube Neon Green, and 1 tube Emerald Green. ("The blue base in the true green from Pravana helped to combat the warm tones in her hair, especially in the lower level areas.")

Step 5: Split out a quarter of the above formula and add a quarter tube Black Additive from Pravana ("to give it a smoother transition from her dark root.") Apply from the midshaft to ends. Process with heat for 15 minutes. Cool without cap for 30 mintes. Rinse thoroughly at the bowl. Do not shampoo but condition lightly.
