Because we shoot with professional models, it is very difficult to find an established model willing to go for a dramatic hair cut and color. It was no surprise that just three models showed up for the casting for this issue since we were looking for models interested in a "big change."
"Doesn't matter," said Rodney Cutler after meeting new model Kate, who had just signed with BMG in New York. "We just need ONE girl and Kate is perfect!"
Cutler, a celeb stylist, salon owner, Redken Brand Ambassador and creator of "Runway Your Way" for Ulta salons, believed he could make a big difference for Kate, who is in the process of building her portfolio. While she arrived looking "OK" according to Cutler, he could see the real potential and knew that a striking hair cut would amplify her opportunities in the very competitive modeling world.
"She has an all-American look, but I wanted to give her an edgy look," says Cutler. "My goal was to give her something that pops-something striking, more rock and roll-something strong. I wanted to avoid goth, but still be edgy and pretty. It can be extreme or simple, but must be something. The take away is that it has to be a beautiful image."
To get the "wow" factor, Cutler and team, including senior colorist Dallace, created a slightly asymmetrical "shag-bob," added micro-lights and then coated it with shocking blue "to make it pop more and shine," says Dallace. "Black alone is too flat."
"Most importantly," says Cutler, "is that Kate looked at it and said ‘wow' when she saw her finished look. It is effortless and wearable and has made the client happy."
