Top techniques for curlies: Touch the hair gently; the frizzier it tends to be, the less you can touch it until it’s about 80 percent dry—or get ready for frizz! Use overhead heat to set and simulate air drying.

How I acquired my “texpertise”: My Auntie Lynn Felix, who brought me into the business, had extremely curly hair. She was and still is amazing at textured hair, so I learned by watching her and picking up the tips she used on her own hair. Fresh out of cosmetology school, I would cut and style her hair, and she would coach me through the process. It was like getting a master’s degree at a young age!
My best advice for working with texture: Be patient; curl and wave take time to develop. And don’t fear texture! Practice different product and styling combinations. Listen to what clients tell you in the consultation to find out their styling “red flags.”
Textured looks for spring: Bob lengths for wave and curl are huge! Think supermodel Arizona Muse and Keira Knightley in Seeking a Friend for the End of the World. Another big look now is ultralong waves with a side or center parting.
