6 Salon, which is based in Birmingham, Michigan, and owned by Tomy Lulgjuraj, Johnny Nikollaj and George Nikollaj, captured the 2014 SALONS OF THE YEAR interior design competition, and landed the cover of the June 2014 issue of SALON TODAY. Stacey Soble, editor in chief of SALON TODAY, announced the winner and revealed the cover at a certificate presentation at the Premiere Orlando International Beauty Event in Orlando, Florida, May 31, at an exclusive event held for salon owners.
“Our panel of expert judges were impressed with 6 Salon’s careful space planning, as well as its architecturally detailed styling stations, copper metallic separation panels and the photographic imagery on its accent wall,” Soble says.
In this year’s competition, Shep Studio in Provo, Utah, owned by Shep and Tracy Wolsey captured First Runner-Up; HC Studio in Brookline, Massachusetts, owned by Susan Healy claimed Second Runner-Up; and Cloud 10 Blow Dry Bar and Hair Salon in Delray Beach, Florida, owned by Jodi Dery was named Third Runner-Up. The competition also recognized 14 SALONS OF DISTINCTION for their exceptional interior designs. (See list below.)
The judging for SALONS OF THE YEAR 2014 took place in three phases. First, the SALON TODAY team reviewed each application, including essays and photography, and qualified each entry. Next, a panel of editors and art directors evaluated each entry in further detail, selecting a group of finalists. Finally, the panel of expert judges scrutinized essays and evaluated seven to 10 images from the finalists, scoring them in six different décor categories. Judges’ scores were combined and used to determine the grand-prize winner, the runners up and the Salons of Distinction.
