Hard-parts and undercuts don't seem to be going anywhere in the world of trending styles, but some of these meticulous cuts can be tricky. One such decision you have to make as a stylist when placing disconnection in undercut shapes is where you want to place the part.

"The most important view to consider when placing disconnection is the 90 degrees that our guest sees on a daily basis—the view that is roughly from ear-to-ear when they look in the mirror," says David Boyd of the Sam Villa ArTeam. "The other 260 degrees of the haircut is for everyone else to see."

According to Boyd, there are more or less three ways to create a part on disconnected undercuts.

Option 1: Detachment below the round of the head

Placing a part below the round will create a look that expands up and away from the head shape. It'll read as more bold, elegant and texturized.

Option 2: Detachment directly on top of the round of the head

This is the safest option. "It allows us to stack the hair above the round of the head in a way that is very close to the head and gives us a view that is very lean and safe," Boyd says. This will also be the easiest stye-at-home option for your client.

Option 3: Detachment above the round of the head

Having a part above the round of the head is a bold, aggressive look, a la Macklemore.

"It is also important to access the silhouette and shape of the head along with the context of the cut," Boyd says. Don't forget to ask your client about his personal style, occupation and what he does for fun in order to have a comprehensive consultation.

"Once we understand the context of the cut, we can then create a look that is fashionable, easy to style and one that suits their personality and lifestyle," Boyd says.
