Team MODERN went backstage with CHI in Miami, Florida for the 63rd Annual Miss Universe Competition. All weekend long we've been getting the inside scoop, on the glitz, glamour, the what's hot and what's not of pageant beauty. And, who could've chosen a more perfect time with prom and wedding season right around the corner. From asymmetrical bobs and pixie cuts to luxurious curls and mermaid waves, here's what we've spotted!

Short hair, don't care. Sporting short, non-traditional pageant styles, Miss Jamaica, Miss Ghana and Miss Kenya proved that a short crop can be just as striking and glamorous as long, tousled tresses. Giving Halle Berry a run for her money, fourth runner-up Miss Jamaica rocked a face-framing pixie. Channeling her Kenyan countrywomen, Lupita Nyong'o, Miss Kenya went for a textured box fade. And, Miss Germany opted for an asymmetrical bob.

Bold lips. Among a sea of nude, 30 contestants dared to go bold with colorful pouts. On trend with this season's most talked about colors, berry, marsala, and plum lips were seen on stage.

Luxurious Curls. Known as the classic red carpet look, more than half of the contestants wore their hair in loose curls and waves. The CHI styling team's tip for making this style last all night is hairspray. Lightly spray the hair before and after curling for optimal staying power.

Smoky Eyes. Nothing says special occasion more than a good smoky eye. From the classic combination of brown and black shadows to dark purple and lavender, this smoldering makeup was seen on just about every contestant. And, we can't blame them. It looks good on everyone!

Chic Updos. We're reaching a little bit with this category, but we have to mention this hairdo. Half up, half down looks were the true heroes of the Miss Universe formal wear presentation. Pinning the hair effortlessly from the front of the face to the middle of the head, put the spotlight on the contestants' gorgeous faces.

Gradient Color. Whether you call it ombre, sombre, balayage or ecaille, gradient hair color was all over backstage! Golden, honey, sandy and platinum blonde shades were the colors of choice. Seen on Miss Argentina, Miss Curacao and Miss Aruba.

Silky Blowouts. Go big or go home. How about go sleek and go chic? Miss Russia, second runner-up Miss Ukraine, Miss Saint Lucia and Miss Slovenia got the memo and were styled with smooth, straight tresses.

Natural Texture. Miss Ghana and Miss Kenya brought natural texture to primetime. Miss Ghana wore her coils in a twistout style, while Miss Kenya went short with a cropped afro.

Extensions. This is our little secret. We'll never tell which contestants had some extra help in the hair department. But, what we can share is that extensions were everywhere. Need to create more volume? Or, pump up an updo? Extensions can do both and much more!
