"My client,  an old friend from middle school, came to me with a grown out perm and wanted a color change to freshen up her look," says Maayan Birstein (@maayanbescene) of the Be Scene Studios. "She gave me creative control over what color to do and I thought a subtle deep red violet would be beautiful." Birnstein, mentored by Color Master Linh Phan, put her knowledge to work.

Get the color: Deep red-violet

Formula A: Schwarzkopf Blondme premium lift 9+ with 20 volume premium developer
Formula B: Schwarzkopf Igora royal 4-99 with inch of 0-88 10 volume developer
Formula C: Schwarzkopf Igora royal 6-99 with inch of 0-88 7 volume developer

STEP 1: Balayage with Formula A. Focus higher around the face. Thoroughly saturate each section. Process 30 minutes until hair reaches a level 6.
STEP 2: Apply Formula B from root to an inch into the lightened hair.
STEP 3: Apply Formula C from the start of the balayage through the ends. Blend thoroughly where the two formulas meet on the hair.
STEP 4: Process 30 minutes, shampoo and blowdry smooth. Style with a 1.25-inch curling iron and alternate directions of each curl.
