Can you come up with one word to describe summer awards shows? Hot!

Though we love the elegant styles sported by stars on red carpets for the more formal red carpets during spring awards season—Oscars, Emmys, Golden Globes—the real fun starts at shows like the Teen Choice Awards, where stars young and not-so-young rock some exciting ’dos. Let’s take a look at a few of the stars who decided to walk on the wild side, then hear from the stylist who created Kristen Stewart’s rocker-chic texture.

Wild Styles: Teen Choice Awards

DEMI LOVATO

Demi’s no stranger to daring color choices: Before the Teen Choice Awards, she was rocking some candy cotton pink tips, and before that, she made the dramatic change from a rich brunette shade to blonde for her new hosting gig on “The X Factor.” And in true Demi fashion, her hair was her most buzzworthy asset at the awards show, switching up her ‘do more than three times, including this electric blue ombre shakeup.

GWEN STEFANI

She’s back! And it looks she’s bringing back her beloved ’90s styles, as well. Gwen rocked the stage with No Doubt for the band’s first performance together in a decade, and with a few twists and knots, she showed that the girl’s still got her signature, delightfully punk rock style.

Salon tip:

For clients embarking on the journey to become as dramatically blonde as Gwen, stress the importance of upkeep when they leave the salon. Suggest a “wellness” kit, like this one from Malibu C.

REBECCA BLACK

Did we miss the memo to Teen Choice Awards attendees that funky hair colors were mandatory? Teen sensation Rebecca showed off rich cranberry ombre tips with her natural brown locks on the red carpet. Does it match her outfit? Not quite. Does it matter? Not really.

Wild Styles: Teen Choice Awards

KRISTEN STEWART

If anyone can rock a deep side-part and hair flip, it’s Kristen. A big fan of texture, Kristen always exhibits a “royal rocker chic” style, which is exactly the inspiration stylist Giannandrea rolled with to create her Teen Choice Awards look.

Salon how-to:

From Giannandrea:

“I started with wet hair and applied Kerastase Volumeactive Mousse to the whole head. I used a wide teeth comb through to create a deep side part, and created large comb lines straight down the length of the hair. I then used a diffuser to dry the whole head without touching the hair too much - just slowly drying.

Once the head was almost dry I had Kristen flip her head upside down to finalize the drying process, and to get the texture raw I used my hands to shake up the roots. She flipped her head back up, and it was big and messy. I applied a paste to give it a bit more texture and to smooth some flyaways, but not all. I wanted it to stay messy overall.

I pulled back the hair behind the ear and made a small braid. I stopped braiding 3/4 of the way, and left the ends long. On the other side I did a few little peek-a-boo braids in the back of the head - one low and one on top of the ear. I shook it all up a bit and sprayed L’Oreal Elnett Hairspray generously on top and all over to get that chic rocker look!”
