Alisia Jarae (@jaraeroe) a hairstylist at Universal Hair Gallery, Fort Washington, Maryland, was not expecting her client to come in and say she wanted purple hair.

"It caught me off guard," says Jarae, "She said she wanted something different and bold for the New Year. She told me to do whatever I would like as long as her hair was purple. I took the colors and ran with it."

Jarae used scenery as inspiration, "Like a sunset. I just painted her hair as if it was a blank canvas."

Here she offers us the steps on her client who had virgin hair:

STEP 1: Using Wella Blondor with 30 volume developer, lighten the mid lengths and ends for about 20 minutes.

STEP 2: While processing, apply the same formula to the root area.

STEP 3: Process for an additional 15 minutes, lifting to pale yellow, about a level 10. Shampoo, condition and towel dry.

STEP 4: Part the hair in a horizontal zig zag part from ear to ear. The next colors are all Joico Intensity Pigment. Starting in the back, apply Dark Purple at the roots and Lighter Purple with Magenta at the mid lengths and ends, mixing the colors up with different pattern techniques.

STEP 5: At the top switch to Indigo Blue at the roots, contrasting the Purple and Magenta throughout the mid lengths and ends. Protect each section with perforated film.

STEP 6: Process with heat for 20 minutes. Shampoo and condition the hair.
